At the time these photographs were taken, I was embarking upon the project with a sense of curiosity. I was interested in the different kinds of women who became police officers. Police patrol seems the most male of all male jobs and most policemen hold on to this notion steadfastly. These women were breaking stereotypes for female behavior: they were physically competent; they were in authority; they lived in danger and carried a gun. And they were working as equals to men. Yet they did not regard themselves as feminists per se. They were on the job because it was what they wanted to do.
